Marybeth Kurnat, soprano

marybethMarybeth became a member of both the Chicago Choral Artists and the St. Charles Singers for the 2016-17 season, jumpstarting her adventures as a professional choral singer.  She has built her singing career on the foundation of her instrumental training as a jazz saxophonist, and her dynamic performing background is accompanied by a career in education and composing/arranging.

Marybeth is a native of DeKalb, IL, and collaborates often in her hometown’s performance community. She appears frequently both DeKalb High School’s choral program and the DeKalb Municipal Band as a soloist and arranger. She recently served as chorus master for the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra performance of Holst’s “The Planets” in October 2016, and performs seasonally as a soloist for DeKalb’s United Church of Christ.  She has performed 7 leading roles in musical theater and opera since 2005, and also enjoys performing as a recitalist. Away from home, Marybeth has performed abroad as a choral musician in Canada as well as the UK, where she will be returning in June 2017 with the St. Charles Singers.

Marybeth earned her Bachelor’s degree in music education from Northern Illinois University in 2011. She has been teaching in public schools since 2012, and has taught privately as a woodwind instructor since 2006. Marybeth is currently the music department chair at Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove, where she teaches beginning band and choral music for grades 3 & 4.  She is frequently engaged as a clinician, adjudicator, and camp counselor, and is a member of NAfME and ACDA.
